It's something we'd all love to do...improve our psychic abilities! But what does being psychic mean, and how do we become it?

Good news! You are psychic!

As a child, you may have had imaginary friends, you may have believed in fairies, you almost certainly had an awareness that you have lost in adulthood. The good news is, that you can get this openness back, if you choose.

Being psychic is not about reading peoples' minds or being able to predict the future. It is about tuning in to the information available to us from universal energies, other people, natural phenomena, animals, plants, and perhaps your spirit guides. It is about listening to our gut instinct...how many times have you caught yourself saying, "I knew I shouldn't have done that" or, "I wish I'd trusted my instincts"?

Here are six ways in which you can improve your psychic abilities. None of them are a quick fix and some require lots of practice and dedication, but all will help you to tune in to that inner voice, your true instincts.

1. Meditate.

Meditation is often cited as the cure for many evils; stress, depression, anxiety, and now it is the main way in which to become psychic? Yes! But meditation may not be what you think. For some, the deepest soul-searching can be done out in nature, perhaps whilst walking your dog. Many people like a dimly lit room, with candles and incense burning, gentle music playing, no interruptions from the outside world. Others will meditate whilst out jogging (not me, I only run if I'm being chased). What matters most is what you are doing with your mind.

The important thing here is that you allow your mind to be led. Clear it of the daily grind...What shall I cook for tea?...Did I switch off my straighteners?...Is my friend cross with me for being honest with her?... Forget these for a moment and listen to what comes in in their place. The smallest thought, a colour, a flower, an animal, a face (familiar or unfamiliar), a memory from long ago, let it come in and sit with it for a while.

Don't expect too much too soon. Make a note of all the little things that come to you (I like to buy a beautiful notebook, any excuse for new stationery). Don't worry if nothing makes any sense to start with, gradually the messages will become clearer and longer as you become more experienced at letting your mind listen and believe what comes.

Try to spend a little time doing this every day, just five minutes is enough to start with. Keep writing down the thoughts.

You could try one of my guided meditations to help get you started.

2. Oracle Cards.

Oracle cards can be much more user friendly than traditional tarot cards, as they often contain a short message written on the card, and usually come with a book giving more in-depth meanings. There are oracle cards available in almost every style you might dream of, from fairies and unicorns to spirit animals and trees. They are available from high street bookshops, as well as "alternative" shops, and easy to purchase online.

Once you have chosen the deck you are drawn to, make it a regular ritual (daily is good, but weekly will do if you are busy) to choose a card for you. You can do this by shuffling the cards and then spreading them out on the table. With eyes closed or open, allow your fingers to hover over each card until one of them seems to "feel right". Don't think too much about this process, allow yourself to trust your instinct.

Before you reach for the book to learn the meaning of the card you have picked, take some time to look at the picture on the card, each tiny detail. What do you notice in the picture? Say aloud what you see, or jot it down in your notebook. What do you feel the card is trying to tell you? Sometimes, cards with words on can make this process harder as you will tend to read the words instead of looking at the picture.

Regular practice of this will have you gleaning more and more meaning and messages from the picture on each card. By all means, read the book to see if your interpretation matches what they have written, but trust what your mind noticed in the card as being what you needed to hear the most.

Why not try this with a friend? Allow them to choose a card and then see if you can "read" it for them. Ask them if they can make sense of the message you have seen in the card for them. The more you do this, the more accurate and detailed your readings will become.

3. Play with Energy.

Try this... Touch your index finger to your thumb. Gently pull them apart a tiny bit, focussing your eyes on the gap between them. This is best done against a dark background. If it helps, squint your eyes slightly to blur the vision. Can you see the energy swirling between your finger and thumb? What colour do you see? Does it draw out like a string when you pull them further apart? If you cup your hands together, can you see it between your hands?

Now close your eyes, and cup your hands together. Can you feel the heat of the energy buzzing in your palms? This is healing energy!

Try holding a crystal in your hand and feel what sort of energy it gives you. Some will feel hot, some cold, some will vibrate or buzz, some send energy waves up your arm. Be patient with yourself and don't give up if you do not feel these things immediately. Keep trying, make a note of even the tiniest things you see or feel. Let me know in the comments how you are getting on.

This is also a great way to develop your ability to see auras.

Developing your skills as a healer is actually a wonderful way to enhance your mediumship, and vice versa.

4. Animal Communication.

If you or someone you know has a pet, try tuning in to their thoughts. This is a great way to know if you have managed to switch off your daily grind mind, as your dog will definitely not be worrying about yesterday's conversation, or tomorrow's work schedule!

Allow your mind to drift, as you did with the meditation, and see if you can pick up on the emotions of your pet. If your tummy rumbles when you have already eaten, perhaps it is their hunger you have tuned in to. If you are feeling calm but suddenly pick up some anxiety, could there be something that they are nervous of? If you now feel a pain somewhere, could it something causing them discomfort? Remember, our own animals often reflect our hidden emotions, so what you pick up might actually be some unresolved things of yours.

5. Protection.

Just as it is important to learn how to tune in, it is also important to learn how to tune out! As you increase your psychic abilities, you become more empathic and susceptible to feeling the emotions of others and thinking they are your own. There are times when we need to close down our gifts in order to protect ourselves. There are many ways in which to do this. Here is a simple and effective method.

Close your eyes

Visualise a field of light surrounding you

Pour energy into this light, making it brighter and stronger

See this light growing, surrounding you in a deep bright layer or strength

Say out loud or in your mind, "I am safe, I am protected, I am loved"

It is a good idea to do this protection ritual before and after any psychic work. See my blog on opening up and closing down for more ideas on protection.

6. Join a Circle.

There are many psychic development circles all around the country, but it can be hard to find one. If you have a local spiritualist church, this can be a good place to ask. Some towns have a wellness centre, or an awareness centre. Use search engines to seek out local groups, including looking for meditation groups, as this can be a good place to start. Keep an eye on local papers, shop notice boards, look for business cards or newsletters in local health food shops, or anywhere selling pagan supplies. You could ask on local pages of social media sites. Most groups will charge a small amount to cover the room hire, refreshments, and for the time of the person running the group, but you shouldn't have to pay a huge amount to join a circle. Some circles are "closed", this is simply to allow group members to build up a trust in each other and to keep a constant energy from week to week, rather than having people drop in and out.

A good circle leader will be welcoming and friendly, and will hold a safe space, ensuring that everyone knows how to close down the energies at the end of the evening. All circles are different, some focussing on card reading, some on healing, some on spirit communication and mediumship, some touching on a variety of different topics. Find one where you feel relaxed and comfortable, with an open-minded leader whom you feel you can trust.

Being psychic is about getting to know yourself better. It is a journey that lasts a lifetime, a continuous learning and developing, and above all it is about trust. Find a place of peace in this world, and a place of peace in your mind. Visit them both, often.

As ever, let me know how you are doing in the comments. Also share other ideas for psychic development! Nicky xx
